Welcome
Welcome to the Oral Communication Retreat
for English Teachers. Your role as a participant
in this meeting is very important as you
are acting as a representative for the students
and English teachers at your school. The
activities we have planned will enable you
to exchange and create many new teaching
ideas together. Your ideas are very important
so please share them!
As you know, the retreat has
been divided
into two three-day sections. Between
seminars,
you will be required to complete a
project,
which you will present at the second
seminar
in December. The activities and workshops
we have planned for Oral Communication
A
have been designed to help you prepare
for
this project. Each day of the retreat
includes
specific goals.
The first day includes activities
that
will allow everyone the chance to get
to
know each other. We want to make sure
that
everyone is relaxed and feels comfortable
speaking English. Additionally, we
would
like to discuss various methods of
teaching
the four skills required to learn English
in order to reach students of all learning
styles. Through group discussions and
a teaching
demonstration, you will learn effective
ways
to create lessons that are skills focused.
The focus of the second day is
drama
and cultural understanding. We have
prepared
a "Folktale Drama" activity
that
will give you the chance to express
yourself
creatively in English while considering
the
role learning about other cultures
plays
in English Education. Following the
drama
presentations, Christina will lead
a workshop
giving you examples of ways that you
can
incorporate a variety of global themes
into
your English classes.
Finally, we will spend the majority
of the time on the third day discussing
effective
unit planning techniques as well as
team-teaching
problems and possible solutions. We
have
invited an Oral Communication retreat
participant
from last year to help give you advice
and
answer your questions about the unit
plan
project that will be assigned to you.
Please
feel free to ask questions or give
advice
to other teachers based on units you
may
have completed prior to the seminar.
Please let us know if you have
any
questions or problems throughout the
conference.
We're looking forward to working with
you!
Thank you, Alison Yowell
