During this workshop I learned how to debate, I was very happy that I got
to participate.
I have never used 'debate' in my English class and I feel that I am not
confident in speaking English in public, so the 'debate' was good training
for me. I would like the Nagasaki Edeucation Center to plan more of these
kinds of workshops.
This was a valuable opportunity for me, as the workshop provided an environment
in which to improve my English ability in a way that I don't normally get
access to. In particular, the wonderful ALTs helped us a lot through their
assistance. I got a lot of useful ideas on how to help my own students
in the future.
I was a little worried about the debate because it was my first one, but
we had enough time to prepare so I was confident I could do it. The advice
of the ALTs was really helpful and accurate and I learned a lot from the
other teachers as well. From now on, I really would like to take part in
more workshops of this kind. I want to improve my English ability and would
like to have the chance to try debate again.
Through practicing and preparing for the debate, I learned how to make an effective speech. I have not had much chance to debate, so it was a good experience for me to think logically and try to anticipate opposing arguments. I feel that through practicing making persuasive arguments I could broaden my way of looking at things.

I thought the workshop went well and I was pleased with the results. The
ALTs and JTEs all worked very hard and there were some really good discussions.
It seemed that the Japanese teachers got a lot more comfortable speaking
English by the end of the workshop and I was very impressed with their
debate skills- especially because for some of them it was their first experience
with debate! I hope that the JTEs will consider doing debate with their
students as well.
